A Beginner's Guide to Tennis: What Happens in Your First Lesson?
Tennis can be learned at any age and trains both body and mind. Here is what to know before you start, and how our weekend lessons at Samimi Sports Club work.
If you think "tennis is too hard, I could never start," you're not alone. But with the right approach, a patient coach and regular practice, anyone can learn tennis. It's an active, fun and social sport for both adults and children.
In this article we answer the most common questions from people about to start tennis. Tennis lessons are now part of the classes at Samimi Sports Club.
Why Is Tennis Such a Great Sport?
Tennis isn't a single-skill workout. It trains many abilities at once:
- Fitness: Short sprints, changes of direction and constant movement work your heart and leg muscles.
- Coordination: Tracking the ball and hitting at the right moment builds hand-eye coordination.
- Balance and agility: With every stroke you learn to transfer your body weight properly.
- Focus: Every point is a fresh start. You learn to leave the last mistake behind and concentrate.
- Social side: Tennis is played with a partner. Making training friends and improving together is part of the fun.
What Age Should You Start?
There's no such thing as "too late" for tennis. Children can learn the basic movements through play at an early age, and adults can start and improve at any age. What matters is starting at a pace that suits your level.
What Happens in the First Lesson?
Don't expect perfect strokes in your first lesson. It usually consists of:
- Warm-up and light stretching
- Learning to hold the racket properly (the grip)
- Basics of stance and footwork
- Meeting the ball: simple, controlled strokes
The goal is to get comfortable with the ball and racket, and to leave saying "I want to come back."
What Should You Bring?
- Comfortable sportswear
- Sports shoes suitable for the court
- A water bottle
